Went to Melbourne for my university's global experience module. During the Melbourne trip, the class joined a few events and activities, which one of them was a workshop called "Concept of Japanese Fashion".
The workshop was conducted by EUDA College of Fashion. Before the workshop, there was a short talkshow which was led by one of the senior professor of the college, Mr. Tsuyoshi Otsuki in Japanese and was translated by an English translator.
Introducing Mr. Tsuyoshi Otsuki
Mr. Tsuyoshi Otsuki worked in Paris before he came to Singapore. He is always interested in studying Haute Couture and wants to be a Haute Couture designer one day. Now days, Haute Couture is only displayed in French and Italy as a lot of designers are more interested in creating contemporary fashion. Mr. Otsuki used to collaborate with flower artist for his previous fashion campaigns.
Japanese VS Western Fashion
Less than 100 years ago, the Japanese learn and adapt on how to make Western fashion. The Japanese keep asking themselves on how to compete with Western fashion that already runs for more than 100 years.
Western fashion are mostly body-fitted. Western people like it when the clothing hugs their body, creating a significant body curve, like a coca-cola bottle. Whereas, Japanese fashion are usually 2 dimensional and have a more loose cutting. The Japanese tried to adapt Western's body-fitted clothing and created kimono; where the actual shape of the kimono is loose (Japanese style), but they added an additional belt in the waist area, which made it possible for people to have a body-fitted effect (Western style).
Workshop
During the workshop, the particIpants were provided with materials such as sketch papers, fashion item cutouts, scissors, glue, masking tape, pencils and a red marker.
We were told to design an asymmetrical outfit in 30 minutes using our own imagination, based on Comme de Garcons’ red asymmetrical outfits as the inspiration. I never thought I could design a clothes in 30 minutes but I did it and I was quiet proud with the result!
Personally, this workshop was one of the best activity that the class attended throughout the Melbourne trip. From this workshop, I learned that everyone is actually creative if only they want to let loose of their imagination and just do it!
